Siri Fort is an ancient fort located in New Delhi, India. It was built around 1303 by Alauddin Khalji, the second ruler of the Khalji Dynasty. Alauddin Khalji constructed the fort to protect the city from the frequent attacks by the Mongols, who were a constant threat during that time. Siri Fort was part of a larger city named Siri, the second of the seven medieval cities of Delhi.
The Construction of Siri Fort
Siri Fort was built using stone and bricks and is known for its impressive design inspired by the Afghan-Seljuk style. However, its construction quality was not as durable as some of the other forts built before it. Today, only the ruins of Siri Fort remain, but they give us a glimpse into its past glory.
The Purpose of Siri Fort
Alauddin Khalji built Siri Fort as a stronghold and a base for his military campaigns. The fort was crucial in defending Delhi against the Mongol invasions. In 1303, a Mongol general named Targhi attacked Siri Fort, but he could not break through its strong walls and eventually retreated.
Legend Behind the Name ‘Siri’
There is a chilling legend about how Siri got its name. It is said that the fort’s foundation was built on the severed heads (called ‘sir’ in Hindustani) of around 8,000 Mongol soldiers killed in battle. This story adds a mysterious and dark aura to the fort’s history.
The Layout and Structures
Siri Fort was built in an oval shape with seven gates for entry and exit. Only the south-eastern gate remains today. One of the fort’s most famous features was the Hazar Sutan, or the palace of a thousand pillars, adorned with marble floors and intricate decorations.
Siri Fort and the Khalji Dynasty
The fort’s construction was part of Alauddin Khalji’s ambitious plans to expand and beautify his empire. He also built a large reservoir called Hauz Khas to supply water to the city of Siri. Additionally, he expanded the Quwwatul-Islam Mosque and began constructing a new minaret to surpass the famous Qutub Minar, though it was never completed due to his death in 1316.
The Decline of Siri Fort
Over time, the fort fell into disrepair. Many of its stones and materials were taken by local rulers, including Sher Shah Suri, who used them to build his own city. Today, Siri Fort stands in ruins, a reminder of its historical significance and the architectural feats of the Khalji Dynasty.
Archaeological Discoveries
Archaeological work has recently uncovered parts of the fort’s walls and other structures. An accidental tunnel-like structure was discovered near the Siri Fort Children’s Museum, which has since become a display for visitors. These findings help us learn more about the fort and its history.
The Haunted Legend of Chor Minar
Near Siri Fort is the Chor Minar, a tower with a dark history. It is said to have been used by Alauddin Khalji to display the heads of thieves and Mongol prisoners. The tower has holes in its walls where the heads were placed. Some locals believe the tower is haunted by the spirits of those who were executed there, making it a mysterious and eerie site.
Siri Fort’s rich history, legends, and archaeological discoveries make it a fascinating part of Delhi’s past.
