A long time ago, a sage named Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati lived in the kingdom of Mithila. They were very saintly but had no children, which made them very sad. They prayed to Lord Shiva for a child, and Shiva offered them a choice: they could have a son who would live a long but ordinary life, or a son who would be brilliant but would die at the age of twelve. They chose the second option.
Their son, Markandeya, grew up to be very intelligent and devoted to Lord Shiva. As his twelfth birthday approached, his parents told him about the prophecy of his early death. Instead of being sad, Markandeya decided to spend his time praying even more fervently to Lord Shiva.
On the day he was destined to die, Markandeya went to the temple and started praying to a Shivalingam, a symbol of Lord Shiva. When Yama’s messengers came to take his life, they couldn’t approach him because of his intense devotion. Finally, Yama himself came and threw his noose around Markandeya’s neck. By mistake, the noose also landed around the Shivalingam. This act angered Lord Shiva, who emerged from the Shivalingam in a fierce form.
Shiva fought Yama to protect his devotee, eventually defeating the god of death. Shiva then granted Markandeya the boon of immortality, allowing him to live forever. This miracle is remembered through the Maha Mrityunjaya Stotra, a powerful prayer attributed to Maharishi Markandeya.
