Ghana’s iconic author and staunch feminist, Ama Ata Aidoo has passed away. Aidoo, whose impactful works have connected with readers around the globe, passed away recently, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the world of literature.
The respected author’s classics like The Dilemma of a Ghost and Changes have been taught in West African schools for decades. The Ghanaian author, playwright, and feminist’s family disclosed that she died after a brief illness in the early hours of Wednesday.
“The family … with deep sorrow but in the hope of the resurrection, informs the general public that our beloved relative and writer passed away in the early hours of this morning Wednesday 31st May 2023, after a short illness,” the statement declared, signed by Kwamena Essandoh Aidoo, a representative of the family.
Ama Ata Aidoo’s contributions to literature and encouragement for gender equality have left a great mark on Ghanaian and African literature, inspiring generations of writers and activists alike.
Born in 1942, Ama Ata Aidoo emerged as one of the most influential literary figures of her time. She won many literary awards, including the 1992 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Changes. Aidoo was honoured with the prestigious Ghanatta Award for Literature in 2018, highlighting her marvellous impact on Ghanaian and African literature.
