Renowned Bengali author Samaresh Majumdar passed away on Monday at the age of 79, leaving a void in the world of Bengali literature. On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Twitter, stating that the author’s works captured different aspects of West Bengal’s society and culture, and that he would be remembered for his contribution to Bengali literature.
Majumdar, who was known for his novels such as ‘Uttoradhikar’, ‘Kaalpurush’, ‘Satkahan’, and ‘Adventures of Detective Arjun’, had won several accolades for his work, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘Kalbela’ in 1984. In addition, he was the recipient of the Anand Award, Bankim Award, and was honoured with the ‘Banga Bibhushan’ award by the West Bengal government in 2018.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her grief on the passing of the renowned author, calling it an “irreparable loss to the literary world”. Majumdar’s contribution to Bengali literature has been immense and his death has been mourned by many in the literary fraternity.
