The Walls We Build Around Us is a human story, an emotional ride of how hard life can be and how we cope with tragedy. Emily Gardner is a strong character who just can’t catch a break, dealing with one loss after another, the biggest and most life changing being the accident that takes the life of her fiancé. But she’s also a mother, so it’s not just herself she has to worry about. Her intentions are to start over, a new town and a new life for them to try and move on, the intention of being the Phoenix that rises from the ashes. Unfortunately, her new home has a dark past of its own, and her new hometown is riddled with mysteries and characters that really only seem to be driving her further into madness. As a reader, I believe everyone will want to see her succeed and overcome her mental and emotional scars, but it’s definitely not an easy journey.
What inspired you to become an author?
My whole life I’ve wanted to tell stories. Actually, my whole life I always wanted to direct movies. There’s something about a good movie that I really believe can be inspiring and life changing and just such a wonderful experience when the story draws you in. And so I decided if I can’t make movies on my own, I can write them. I think it’s going well, in fact, because a lot of the people who read my book tell me: “This should I be a movie.” So, mission accomplished.
How did you overcome obstacles in writing along the way?
Writing can be tedious, time consuming, leaving you doubtful and frustrated at times, but in the end it’s all worth it. Working full time and being a full time parent, I just write whenever and wherever I can. It surprises people actually when they ask how I am able to write a full book and I tell them, I write on my phone. Yes, all 110 plus thousand words I wrote using a word document on a phone. And honestly, it’s my favorite way to do it now. And of course there are lulls sometimes, but as any writer will tell you, if you’re having a hard time writing, then read. Read books. You’ll become a better writer, and it’s so very true. I wouldn’t have been able to write something like this book if it weren’t for the greats, most notably Mr. Stephen King, my all time inspiration.
What reader demographic will enjoy this book?
This book really has something for everybody. Do you like a bit mystery? Do you like an underdog story? Do you like a bit of romance? Do you know what it’s like to lose someone in your life? Are you a parent? Do you want to hold your breath with anticipation? At the very base level you can look at it and think, “Here’s a book about a woman trying to move on with her life.” But it’s so much more than that, and if you make it to the end, I promise it will leave you speechless.
