As a child, Porche Berry’s TV diet included programs on nutrition. Seeing pharmaceutical drugs fail repeatedly to treat the long-term health problems of family and friends spurred an early interest in natural medicine. That interest deepened after she became the mother to a child who reacted strongly to pharmaceuticals. During research to help her child, Berry discovered that she had a knack for translating technical topics into lay language. She hopes to help people take command of their own health through The Natural Path and her website.
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF?
As a child, I used to watch shows about nutrition but didn’t figure out that health is where my passion lies until I was almost 30!
YOUR SECOND BOOK, “THE OIL APOTHECARY”, WAS PUBLISHED RECENTLY. TO BEGIN WITH, COULD YOU TELL THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE BOOK?
The book is a modern perspective on essential oils. It strips away sales speech that companies apply while also applying current research to ensure accuracy.I’ve written it in such a way that it will give the layperson a strong knowledge base without undermining the value a licensed aromatherapist offers.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE?
For this specific book, I wanted to help others avoid the accident I had with my own child. Some oils can be very dangerous to the user if you are not given accurate information. This can range from drug interactions to affecting medical conditions. While others are dangerous for children or pregnant people.
WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS OF WRITING A BOOK?
With non-fiction, I can afford to write things out of order and then rearrange them so it makes sense. I have CPTSD so my brain can jump around sometimes.Instead of fighting it, I worked with the natural flow to get the words onto the page and used editing to fix it.
WHAT BOOK ARE YOU PLANNING TO WRITE NEXT?
I am in the process of writing 2 more non-fiction books. One is focused on pollutants found in the home and the other is focused on kitchen spices for herbal medicine instead of buying all kinds of exotic options that are frequently recommended. The exotic ones work but it leaves herbal medicine out of the budget range for a lot of people.
FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
Write it badly. Editing exists for a reason. You can also use free software like Grammarly to take care of the very basic editing before paying someone.
